Nneka Egbuna is a Nigerian musician whose star continues to rise. With the release of her latest album Concrete Jungle (for the U.S market) she continues to capture the ear of many. She has been compared to artists from Lauryn Hill to Fela Kuti. This blog earlier this year declared her its favourite artist. She is currently on tour with Nas & Damian Marley on their Distant Relatives Tour as the opening act. She also has a new song Viva Africa featured on the 2010 World Cup soundtrack. An outspoken artist on many issues like Africa, faith love, corruption, the Niger Delta and more she continues to shake things up musically. Another exciting new artist (that I admittedly randomly discovered on a blog) is Nigerian born artist Nneka Egbuna . Now currently based in Germany, Nneka has released 2 albums and an EP, with her debut album "Victim of Truth" garnering critical acclaim. Though relatively still unknown, she is very talented and her fame can only grow. She is already being compared to Lauryn Hill (I wouldn't go that far...yet), but she is reminiscent of L-Boogie (in her spiritual,political musical style). She also seems to be continuing in the spirit of Fela Kuti. Which brings me to her latest album " No Longer At Ease." based on Chinua Achebe's book of the same name. I consider it an even better, more complete album than her debut. The album opens on a serious melodic note,with the haunting "Death Intro" but quickly jumps into the great single "Heartbeat" where she creates an infectious chorus by extending the words repetitively. Description Goethe-Institut Nairobi presents Nneka, an Afro-German warrior princess stretching from teardrop soul-singing to freestyle rapping. She grew up in the Delta region of Nigeria and later relocated to Hamburg. In 2005, she put out her first album, Victim Of Truth, followed by No Longer At Ease (2008) which impressed US rock star Lenny Kravitz so much that he invited her to be the supporting act on his tour. The tour was followed by an extended stay in her native country, where she composed many of the songs on her third album, Soul Is Heavy (2011). This album is multi-faceted and “politically conscious”, a potpourri of Reggae, Soul, Afro, R&B and Hip Hop. Nneka is setting out for an East Africa tour made possible by Goethe-Institut to Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and the Sauti za Busara festival in Zanzibar. So, anyway I guess my " exclusive " post about Nneka wasn't that exclusive after all. Turns out word is already doing the rounds, albeit quietly that she will be performing at Musuem Hill. It seems like the decision for her to perform here might have been a bit rushed. It will be interesting to see what kind of promo they can give this concert in that short period.Nneka will be be on a three city tour of Kigali, Kampala and Nairobi and will end her tour in Zanzibar at the Sauti Za Busara Festival . Anyway here are the details below as of now. I don’t know what’s happened in the past few years in the Nigerian music scene, or what has sparked this sudden wave of great music & artists, but one thing is sure, I am enjoying it! I already introduced many of you to a brilliant artist called Nneka (the who recently moved back to Nigeria from Germany) on this blog, and now I want to talk about another equally great singer. Many of you may have already heard of this Paris-born Nigerian artist called Asa (pronounced Asha ), and if you’ve followed this blog I’ve previously posted some of her videos. (see here and here ). Well, now I am here to review her eponymous debut album which was released in 2007. I really need to get better at doing reviews because I take too much time to do them, and considering I’ve had this album since mid 2008 it’s been a long time coming for this review. What can I say, I just realized last year she's now my favourite artist. I don't know, it's like there's a type of artist I've been looking for, for years and I just hadn't found him/her until now.There's just no one (since Lauryn Hill) who was really inspiring me. So if I post alot of Nneka stuff, please bear with me...lol
