Sorry, we gotta wait until next December "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" follows title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever ... Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths ofguile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum's "precious...

The concept behind Just A Band ‘s new video came about from a challenge — two Norwegian filmmakers in Kenya dared the band to shoot a video “with a bunch of constraints, such as having to include a movie reference… starting with A Clockwork Orange.” In response, the boys suited up in an array of improvised costumes and filmed this minstrel-like, ’20s feel clip for “Huff + Puff” in the outskirts of Nairobi. Watch Elsaphan Njora, Kevin (K2) Maina and all of JAB duke it out and throw down some serious moves in A Tale of Graceless Shuffling above. The video-challenge is a part of the upcoming documentary The Big C. Find “Huff + Puff” on Just A Band’s excellent 82 LP. via okayafrica

After the wait, the album has finally arrived. Ma3 (Ma-Three) the “six-piece, quirky Afro-pop band from Nairobi” as they describe themselves recently launched their album Beba Beba to a packed house at the Goethe Institut. And what a cool event it was, with the crowd eager to discover what this not-so-new band had created on their debut album. And has Ma-3 lived up to our expectations, for some yes, but for others like me not quite. Beba Beba is a decent debut album, but lacks certain should I say, punch. With their groovy, infectious title single “ Beba Beba ” Ma-3 certainly caught our attention, and placed expectations high for the rest of the album. They certainly got it right with that single (which I admit grew on me), that invites the listener to “have a seat in the mathree.” It is a very apt single filled not only with messages of hope, reconciliation and peace (“spread the smiles and not the arrows”) and also action, (“it starts with me and then to you.”) They no doubt g...

Ma3 (Maa-Three) is a 6-piece, quirky Afro Pop band from Nairobi that borrows its name from the inescapable public transport mini-vans that dot cities in Kenya and all over Africa. In the two short years that Ma3 has been in existence, the band has headlined two of the biggest festivals to grace Nairobi, i.e. the Spread the Love Festival with Kirk Franklin and Nairobi Kinanda Arts Festival featuring F reshly Ground , Kwani LitFest and Shukas N Juice Concert . Ma3 ’s sound is that of young, contemporary, urban Africa; mixing soulful English /Swahili lyrics with spell binding guitar riffs built on a solid rhythm section. I really want to wactch this documentary. This is why we need an indie space in Kenya, to showcase things that are not in the mainstream. Not all of us are dying to watch the latest Harry Potter or Transformers. I would much rather watch such material/ A scene that includes a speech from Eldridge Cleaver, the Minister of Information for the Black Panther Party in 1968.

We hear the radio speak of doom of torrents of rain, of none at all. Still we slumber on khangas and dream of grass underneath, green and thick. Nairobi's stream will be clean again -- clean to drink, to watch and wade in -- and on its banks grass will grow, or else even we shall cease and sleep.

I am so sad and depressed by this right now. It's like gosh..all I can ask is WHY..you know? *SIGH!!** I dont think you understand, she is(was) like my top 2 favourite artists right now(apart from Nneka I think). The thing I love about Amy is she gave me hope in music again, hope that there are artists out there with real talent, with great lyrics, who are pushing boundaries. Amy Winehouse was instrumental in reviving pop-soul music in the UK and US for cyin out loud. She made American singers look bad, and showed them how soul should really be done again- made them rediscover their creation! I ve listened to Back to Black more times than i can count just exploring her voice, and sound, every note she sang and change and her no-holds barred, expose-it-all intelligently written lyrics were soo great to hear. This is just sad, I was used to regularly check sites for any news on a new album. I know she was currently on tour, I also scoured the internet for any music I hadnt heard like...

In a small, remote mountain top primary school in the Kenyan bush, hundreds of children are jostling for a chance for the free education newly promised by the Kenyan government. One new applicant causes astonishment when he knocks on the door of the school. He is Maruge (Litondo), an old Mau Mau veteran in his eighties who is desperate to learn to read at this late stage of his life. He fought for the liberation of his country and now feels he must have the chance of an education so long denied--even if it means sitting in a classroom alongside six year-olds. The First Grader is a heart warming and inspiring tale of one man's fight for what he believes is his right in order to overcome the burdens of his past. It is a triumphant testimony to the transforming force of education. As Maruge himself said, "the power is in the pen".

What’s the Plan? Hello. We call ourselves Plan B. Kenyans are bombarded daily by all sorts of issues: scandals, price hikes, unemployment, years of poverty, extremely petty politics, Twitter scandals and commissions that make reports that everyone ignores – all this comes to us through an institution of media which (if not distracted by their obsession with sex – enough already!) doesn’t necessarily ask the right questions. Anyone looking at the current ‘youth leaders‘ would think that young people in Kenya are a rowdy, unfocused, naughty lot – not fit to lead anything. What’s the plan? We’re trying to create a space where sensible young Kenyans can discuss the future of this country and how we can get better as a country. We believe that there are so many young people in this country who know what can be done, how things should be done – and we’re going to find them. We’ve started off by asking young journalists, artists and activists who are movers in their fields for thei...

You could hear your Snoop Dogg & Dr.Dre on the radio then minutes later they would play Digable Planets & Arrested Development .
