Music Seen! Frank Ocean - "Channel Orange"

Image
After dropping dozens and dozens of songs plus numerous collaborations Frank Ocean has finally released his highly anticipated debut album Channel Orange . With R&B music making small strides at a mainstream comeback, talented artists like Ocean have all eyes set on them as heads want to see if the genre has anyone who can spark a rebirth. Make no mistake though, if you don't rely on the radio like me, good R&B music definitely has never died(just gone underground.) After the intro track, we get into "Thinkin Bout You;" though not a new song, it was definitely a well-thought out addition to this album. I remember playing this song alot while driving last year. It is just a lovely, well-written, well-sang song; I am even thinking of buying a copy of the single for my girl. "Sierra Leone" has a killer bass track that makes me want to upgrade my living room sound system, some smooth ish right there! The album gets even better on "Sweet Life...

A young, aspiring actor from upcountry Kenya dreams of becoming a success in the big city. In pursuit of this and to the chagrin of his brother and parents, he makes his way to Nairobi: the city of opportunity. He quickly understands why Nairobi is nicknamed Nairobbery as he is robbed of all his money and belongings and left alone in a city where he doesn't know a soul. Luck, or the lack, of it brings him face to face with two groups of downtown crooks and he forms a friendship with a young small time gang leader who takes him in. He is quickly drawn into a new world of theft and violence, even as he still tries to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. Keeping the two worlds separate proves to be a contest for him as he struggles to survive in this unknown world called Nairobi.

Lauryn Hill statement on her unpaid taxes

Image
I found this an interesting statement from L.Boogie on why she failed to file her tax returns and about her relatively recent life and state of mind. To me this statement really sums up why Ms.Hill left the mainstream. So if you're still puzzled and/or angered at why she "abandoned" fans, don't be. I fully understand her reasons. Lauryn Hill is aware and chooses not to live in blindness and ignorance (which many of us do.) If you're living in that state of willful ignorance you'll dismiss her comments as the ramblings of a mentally unstable woman, but if you're aware, they make perfect sense and are valid.(note: I'm not suggesting she should not pay taxes, I believe taxation is a valid concept.) All I can say is live your life in the freedom you now possess and don't compromise it for anyone. Rock on Ms.Hill! (Some background) It was reported yesterday that Ms. Lauryn Hill has been charged with three counts of misdemeanor failure t...

Music Seen! Eric Roberson - "Mister Nice Guy"

Image
Every time I feel I’m about to lose hope in the R&B/soul genre there appears an artist that helps restore my faith and keeps me wanting to return to a music genre that was once so great. An artist who has paid his dues from the church to the stage, Eric Roberson has definitely put in work; the results are evidence of this. I had never heard of Eric Roberson until I saw his name pop up here and there late last year on music blogs. He released his album “ Mister.Nice Guy ” in late 2011 to a lot of acclaim and I decided to check him out. I was impressed by what I heard and so decided to review his albums just to put you folks out there on this cat. So, enough talk lets delve into the album. Eric Roberson’s album opens up with the title song “ Mr.Nice Guy ,” a lovely and honest song about how hard it is to be a gentleman in this day and age. With media and entertainment giving young men the impression that being a player, womanizer and overall bad boy is the way to...

Nneka in Concert: Saturday 4th Feb @Goethe

Image
Description Goethe-Institut Nairobi presents Nneka, an Afro-German warrior princess stretching from teardrop soul-singing to freestyle rapping. She grew up in the Delta region of Nigeria and later relocated to Hamburg. In 2005, she put out her first album, Victim Of Truth, followed by No Longer At Ease (2008) which impressed US rock star Lenny Kravitz so much that he invited her to be the supporting act on his tour. The tour was followed by an extended stay in her native country, where she composed many of the songs on her third album, Soul Is Heavy (2011). This album is multi-faceted and “politically conscious”, a potpourri of Reggae, Soul, Afro, R&B and Hip Hop. Nneka is setting out for an East Africa tour made possible by Goethe-Institut to Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and the Sauti za Busara festival in Zanzibar. Some regard the powerful vocalist Nneka first as an activist, and then as a musician. “I wouldn’t see myself as a political activist,” says the soul singe...

Nneka concert @ Tree House

Image
So, anyway I guess my " exclusive " post about Nneka wasn't that exclusive after all. Turns out word is already doing the rounds, albeit quietly that she will be performing at Musuem Hill. It seems like the decision for her to perform here might have been a bit rushed. It will be interesting to see what kind of promo they can give this concert in that short period.Nneka will be be on a three city tour of Kigali, Kampala and Nairobi and will end her tour in Zanzibar at the Sauti Za Busara Festival . Anyway here are the details below as of now. Date: Saturday, February 4th 2012 Venue: Tree House, Museum Hill, Nairobi Time: 8:00pm-late Tickets: TBA Check out the interview I did with her last year here and here . She is also still my favourite current artist. I will review her latest album Soul Is Heavy soon.

Exclusive: Nneka to perform in Nairobi!

Yup, you heard it here first Nneka will be performing in Nairobi. I don't have details just yet, but expect her very soon! She will probabaly be performing at Goethe Institut This is a like a dream for me, I am so excited! I hope I get to meet her

Video: Capitalism: A Love Story (Trailer)

Image
I can't believe I've not watched this yet. if you have the DVD please hook me up! there's also another excellent movie called Inside Job which you should check out. Capitalism: A Love Story examines the impact of corporate dominance on the everyday lives of Americans (and by default, the rest of the world). The film moves from Middle America, to the halls of power in Washington, to the global financial epicenter in Manhattan. With both humor and outrage, the film explores the question: What is the price that America pays for its love of capitalism? Families pay the price with their jobs, their homes and their savings. Moore goes into the homes of ordinary people whose lives have been turned upside down; and he goes looking for explanations in Washington, DC and elsewhere. What he finds are the all-too-familiar symptoms of a love affair gone astray: lies, abuse, betrayal...and 14,000 jobs being lost every day. Capitalism: A Love Story also presents what a more hopeful futur...
