Video: Tom Mboya & MLK speech

Check out this clip of the late Tom Mboya and Martin Luther King Jr. giving a speech at a 1965 civil Rights Rally in Washington, DC. From all I've heard and read about the man I think Tom Mboya would have made a fine President of the Republic of Kenya, RIP.

African Nationalist Thomas Joseph Mboya coordinated an "airlift" in 1959 of 81 Kenyan students to the USA to attend college. With the help of Dr. King, the African American Students Foundation and its sponsors, Harry Belafonte, Jackie Robinson, and Sidney Poitier, Mboya raised sufficient funds to cover the students' travel expenses. One of the students was a certain Barack Husein Obama snr., the late father of US President Barrack Obama. This rally was in Washington DC, 1959

Muslim writes Luke's Gospel

I thought this was quite a beautiful story to start off the week. We need more religious dialogue and understanding in this world, and less confrontation.

Muslim calligrapher Yasser Abu Saymeh has dedicated the past two months to Christian art, writing the Gospel of Luke in ornate Arabic script to be presented to Pope Benedict XVI when the Roman Catholic leader visits the Holy Land next month.

My contribution to the English language

Hey, I think I've just coined a new phrase! The new phrase is "twixt"

twixt: -noun: a twitter update sent using mobile sms/text

Yes, I know it's also a
board game, but I don't think the word has been used in this sense before. So just wanted to document my contribution to the English language. Cool!

What they say about Christianity. Pt.1

Over the years there are some things you hear about Christianity and religion that make you go, huh? They may either be questions that have easy to figure out answers, ignorant statements or just lies that are unnecessarily perpetuated over time. Here are a few that I have heard/read that I would like to give my take on.

What they say: Those Black people who insist Jesus was black and white people who insist he was Caucasian.

My take: As a black person I guess sometimes black pride makes you want to claim history’s most famous figure. You’ve probably heard black people in the church, or even pastors sometimes say that Jesus was a black man. The fact is Jesus was a Middle-Eastern Jew. Jesus was never a white man, and neither was he black. I know people like to make Jesus fit into their cultural setting which I don’t think is harmful in itself. But the fact is he was not a blue-eyed blonde and neither was a black African. And yes I have seen the Scripture that talks about his feet being the color of bronze. But it also states he has hair as white as wool, so that is probably a description of how Christ looks in His glorified state (i.e. Resurrected body) remember the disciples didn’t recognize Him at first at the tomb?

What they say: You have probably heard people say Christianity is “the white man’s religion.” This is mostly done in a setting where someone is speaking about black, ethnic-pride and about rejecting the colonial mentality and rejecting Western influence.

My take: First of all Christianity is not the “white-mans religion.” You might as well call it the “Jewish-mans religion” because it did arise from Judaism. Second of all, we all know the white-man brought good things and bad things from Europe. Would you still be comfortable using herbs and roots to fight off disease? Missionaries could either be good or bad depending on your point of view, they did bring with them literacy and medicine. Anyway the point is the white man did not invent Christianity.

What they say: "You can’t believe the Bible; it isn’t accurate because it was written by man."

My take: You realize all the knowledge you have so far came from what other men wrote or spoke right? Are you going to discard that too? Would you believe The Bible if I told you God wrote it with His own hand sitting somewhere, or if I said God dropped the book from the sky? I doubt it. The Bible says that God inspired man to write the books which makes sense since the Bible was written over a 3000 year period. Now whether you believe those men were really inspired is up to you.

What they say: People who say you can’t quote from the Bible or use it as a historical reference book?

My take: Why not? The Bible has been shown to be a very accurate historical book, so why exactly can’t I quote from it? The same people who will say you can’t use the Bible has a historical reference will devour books on The Ancient Egyptians and quote liberally from Socrates and The Iliad.

What they say: I stopped being a Christian because there are so many hypocrites in the church! I used to see my pastor/priest/Christian friend doing X,Y,Z… so I stopped going to church.

My take: So let me get this straight, you are perfect right? You have never sinned even once in your life? Wow, I didn’t know pastors and priests were superhumans who could never fail. If everyone in the church were just like you I guess your church would be paradise on earth right? What does what your priests do have anything to do with your relationship with God? You will answer to God personally and your priest won’t be your lawyer pleading your case for you. Your priest/pastor is not God either. So, enough with the excuses about how everyone else in the church has failed, and evaluate how your own situation is with God. What so and so did won’t wash on Judgment Day.

What they say: Sometimes people who are disillusioned with Christianity or religion will become all-inclusive. They start saying things like “well I believe anyone can go to heaven.” Or it doesn’t matter which God you believe in we are all looking for the same thing, or even “there are many paths to heaven, not just one, do what works for you.”

My take: Would you really have respect for a God who would allow Adolf Hitler or the 9-11 hijackers into heaven, no questions asked? I know I wouldn’t. Anyone and everyone will just waltz into heaven I guess… we will live happily ever after in heaven next to child-molesters and murderers? Yes, there is forgiveness, but it is conditional. As for the “many paths” thing, it sounds loving and all-inclusive, but really it’s illogical even from a human point of view. We have qualifying tests to enter school, university, military, medical school etc So why would the ultimate special place like heaven be just a come-one come all? Isn’t it logical that there is some sort of condition somewhere? Also if I choose my path to heaven as praying to high-heeled shoes am I good to go?

Martha you have made the right decision..

I think Martha Karua has made the right decision in quitting the government. This government is going nowhere fast, and it would have not looked too good for you to have remained in it while at the same time criticizing it. You have made the right move at the right time, now you can build your base from the ground up and go to the people.
